(OPIc AL 후기) 5연속 AL, 도전은 계속된다.

연재하듯 계속되는 글이니 제 글을 기억하시는 분이 있을려나요. 저는 OPI 최고 등급을 따기 전 단계로 꾸준히 OPIc을 치루고 있습니다. AL을 따더라도 여전히 갈증이 남는 분들이 저와 같은 고민을 하실 것으로 생각합니다. AL은 땄는데도 내가 원하는 말을 정확히 할 수 없는 한계가 무얼까. 

먼저 글에서 시작했던 AL의 정의에 대한 ACTFL의 공식 글을 더 읽어 보기로 하지요.

Responses produced by Advanced Low speakers are typically not longer than a single paragraph. The speaker’s dominant language may be evident in the use of false cognates, literal translations, or the oral paragraph structure of that language. At times their discourse may be minimal for the level, marked by an irregular flow, and containing noticeable self-correction. More generally, the performance of Advanced Low speakers tends to be uneven.
복합문이 아닌 단문이 많고, 시제 오류, 직역투, 구어체 문장 구조 등…. 가장 큰 문제는 들쭉날쭉한 실력이라는 거죠. 즉 익숙한 문장에서는 완벽에 가깝다가도 생소한 문장에서는 아주 초보적인 실수도 하는…. 이렇게 보면 AL은 이제 영어 마스터의 긴 여정에서 중간 정도 되는 것이죠.

Advanced Low speech is typically marked by a certain grammatical roughness (e.g., inconsistent control of verb endings), but the overall performance of the Advanced-level tasks is sustained, albeit minimally. The vocabulary of Advanced Low speakers often lacks specificity. Nevertheless, Advanced Low speakers are able to use communicative strategies such as rephrasing and circumlocution.
문법적으로도 실수가 많이 있고, 특히 동사 엔딩에서 일관성이 없고 단어 선택에서도 구체성이 결여되어 있다. 대신 돌려서 표현하는 방식으로 원하는 바를 커뮤니케이션 할 전략은 가지고 있다.. 이런 글을 읽으면 솔직히 많이 찔립니다. 정확한 단어가 생각이 안나거나 몰라서 What I am saying is.. 등으로 부연 설명하는 경우가 저도 많이 있으니까요.

Advanced Low speakers contribute to the conversation with sufficient accuracy, clarity, and precision to convey their intended message without misrepresentation or confusion. Their speech can be understood by native speakers unaccustomed to dealing with non-natives, even though this may require some repetition or restatement. When attempting to perform fun-ctions or handle topics associated with the Superior level, the linguistic quality and quantity of their speech will deteriorate significantly.

보통 영어를 잘한다고 할 때는 외국인의 영어에 익숙하지 않은 ‘순수 네이티브’가 알아 듣느냐로 판단하는데.. 알아들을 수는 있지만 반복을 하거나 진술을 수정하는 등의 수고를 거쳐야 되지 바로 알아듣지는 못하는 수준이고, 고급 주제를 다루려면 언어 수준이 확 떨어진다는 이야기를 합니다. 저도 예를 들어 수질 오염에 대해서 이야기를 한다면 별로 할 말이 많지 않고 해당 어휘군도 부족하니 초보적이거나 원론적인 수준의 말 밖에는 못할 것 같습니다.
